Jerry Rice was born October 13, 1962 in Starkville, Mississippi. Jerry was one of eight brothers and sisters. AS a youngster Jerry and his brother worked for his father, a brick layer, during the summer to make ends meet. Working at young age developed a strong work ethic. Jerry’s job was to catch the bricks his brothers and father threw to him. This is believed to be what developed his hand eye coordination.

In high school Jerry excelled in high school sports such as track and basketball. Jerry was interested in football but his mother told him that it was too dangerous and forbid him from playing. One day in high school Jerry Rice was skipping class the principle caught him and he ran away. The principle told the football coach about his amazing speed and that’s when it all began. Jerry became star player for his high school his senior year. At one practice Jerry had gave up on a drill and went back to the locker room but in his mind he felt it wasn’t right and headed back out to the field to finish practice. For jerry Rice he was himself was an obstacle he had to over come.

Jerry and his brother Tom made a pact that one of them would go pro and buy there parents a home. This motivated him to achieve greatness. But when Jerry's
brother didn’t make the NFL the pressure was on Jerry. He lost hope in his dream and attended a college that he felt would prepare him for a future in mechanics or electronics. Jerry received a scholarship to play football for Mississippi Valley State. It was a small school that had only about 2,500 students.

In college Jerry received the nick name “world” because it was believe he could catch anything in the world. Not until Jerry’s junior year did he showcase his true talent where he broke the single game reception record with 24 catches. His senior year he caught 112 receptions for 1845 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also set 18 NCAA Division II records throughout his college career. Jerry ended up with 4693 career receiving yards that year
The next year Jerry was drafted by the 49ers who selected him 16th overall. Jerry’s first year in the pros was a rocky one. Jerry was dropping open passes and only started 4 games. Jerry’s coaches never stopped pushing him. Jerry finally got comfortable and set the team receiving yards record in a game with 241 yards his rookie season

In Jerry’s career he broke every receiving record such as, receiving touchdowns in a single season with 22 that he broke playing only 12 games due to the players’ strike, touchdowns in one game, receiving yards in a season, receiving touchdowns in a season and many more. He also won three super bowls and was voted the most valuable player in one of them. He has some of the greatest highlights

Jerry Rice is worthy of recognition because he is the greatest Wide receiver of All-time. He has taught me that if I really want something I should do everything in my power to achieve that goal. Jerry's name should only be mentioned in the same breath as great athletes such as, Michael Jordan, Hank Aaron, or .Magic Johnson. Jerry’s legacy will continue because every time a receiver has a good game, people will say “he’s good but he is no Jerry Rice “
